This is a question we get asked at least once a day so we thought we’d discuss the difference in this month’s newsletter.

Botox Cosmetic is a brand of neuromodulators (other brands include Xeomin or Dysport) and is one of the most familiar ways to smooth out wrinkles. These treatments work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause certain expression lines or creases. The most common areas treated include the frown lines, the horizontal creases that run across the forehead and the crow’s feet.

Botox is used by many different types of patients and for many different reasons.
People in their late 20’s or early 30’s often use Botox to help prevent wrinkles from forming, whereas someone in their 40’s, 50’s & older may have Botox treatments to soften existing lines and prevent new ones. Botox has an excellent established safety record and is the most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide.

Dermal Fillers, by contrast, do not relax muscles, instead, they work to fill creases and replace lost volume by ‘plumping’ the skin. Typical areas treated with Dermal Fillers (also known as Soft Tissue Fillers) are lips, cheeks, and chin.

Dermal Fillers are also used by a wide variety of people. The most common reason people have this treatment is to “et rid of the tired, drawn out appearance” that comes with aging. Something to keep in mind is that the more volume loss there is, the more filler that is needed. A younger person may require 1-2 syringes (less than a quarter of a teaspoon) in contrast to someone in their 40’s, 50’s & older who usually require an amount equivalent to a teaspoon or more for a very subtle and natural result.

Botox & Fillers Together

Botox and Fillers are completely different yet complement one another beautifully – like champagne and strawberries. Either one used alone is great but combining the two gives a beautiful, soft, natural looking facial appearance especially when administered for age related aesthetic concerns. In many cases, combining Botox and Dermal Fillers may help the soft tissue fillers last longer, adding more bang to your buck!
